The Imagined Past in Stride’s Project Room

I’ve been putting the finishing touches on my upcoming show in Stride’s Project Room. This is my first solo show featuring my sculptural work. This body of work is a personal attempt to step outside of my comfort zone. “Push yourself!” I yell at my students. So I decided to yell at myself a little bit. Four of the works have micro controllers and sensors that allow either a light to respond to movement or Servo motors. I am not a 3-D artist nor am I knowledgeable with electronics but I was determined to create work that responded to the viewer’s movements. Come by Stride on February 22nd to check them out.

Calgary Biennial Review and Catalogue Launch

A review of the Calgary Biennial is up on Portage Press, a new site for critical arts writing. My work is discussed in Eric Heitmann’s article, check it out! Also, tonight is the launch of the catalogue for the show. The curator, Steven Cottingham, sought essays and articles from both artists and writers so I’m looking forward to reading about all the different interpretations of home. Today, home means warm refuge since its about -20 here in Calgary. Blargh. Bring on the chocolat chaud!

September Show Openings

I have three shows opening in three different locations this month. This week, both the Calgary Biennial and BIMPE VII opened in Calgary and Vancouver respectively. The Calgary Biennial is up until September 29th, BIMPE VII is up at Federation Gallery until the 22nd but will be moving to Dundarave in October, SNAP (Edmonton) in January 2013 and The University of British Columbia in Kelowna in February 2013.

I also have work in the 2012 Taiwan International Invitational Mini-Prints Exhibition and Symposium which will open at the National Taiwan Normal University on September 15th. Ten artists were selected to represent Canada at this event, should be a pretty excellent show. Wish I could ship myself to countries as easily and cheaply as I send my prints.

Summer Projects

I’m currently on the other side of the world, recharging my batteries in Australia and Indonesia. My work is never far from my mind and I have several projects coming up during the summer. First up is the Douro Biennial in Portugal. It is quite exciting to have been selected for this. Next up is the inaugural Calgary Biennial in September. I’ll be reincarnating some of my plexiglass works and making a large piece. The theme for the biennial is home and it will be great to see the different interpretations and the depth within the Calgary scene. I’ll be doing some writing while away – it will be interesting to consider home when I’m so far from it.

Just before I left I sent a new edition of prints off to Dustyn Bork who is organizing an interesting portfolio exchange for the Mid-America Print Council. The theme is “High Five” and each of us are making a print in our own style. Then each of us will receive one print from one of the other participants and will make a response print. It’s a great concept and I look forward to seeing all the echoes and connections.

Faculty Show

This is the last week to see my work in the Faculty Show at the Illingworth Kerr Gallery at ACAD. With a large and diverse faculty, the show has something for everyone except art-haters and pheasants. I have declared myself the Silkscreeniest in Show. Don’t miss it.

DNSPE 2012 Update

I just received two copies of the DNSPE 2012 catalogue in the mail today along with the good news that my print “Returning, Pausing” received the Brackett-Krennerich & Associates Architects Purchase Award. This print will now be in the Arkansas State University Permanent Collection.

A quote from the Juror’s Statement (Roberta Waddell) in the catalogue: “While the screenprint particularly lends itself to simple, clearly defined, flat areas of color, Heather Huston takes advantage of the medium’s versatility in Returning, Pausing, a syncopated arrangement of subtly colored, patterned, and layered architectural planes that fluctuate from opaque to translucent.”

Always nice to hear how other people describe my work and to find a fellow fan of the Oxford comma.

2012 Delta National Small Prints Exhibition

My work will be showing in the 2012 Delta National Small Prints Exhibition this year at Bradbury Gallery at Arkansas State University. Sixty artists were selected by Roberta Waddell, curator of prints emerita at the New York Public Library, from over six hundred entries and I am the only or one of the only artists from outside of the US. Opening is on January 19th.
