SGCI 2014 – San Francisco

I recently returned from the 2014 SGCI conference in San Francisco. As always it was great to connect and reconnect with printmakers from around the world. Some highlights included Kathan Brown’s talk, the Open Portfolio sessions, and the opportunity to be introduced to Jiri Anderle’s sublime work in the flesh. Some products to try including water-based etching ink by Charbonnel and a non-toxic ground called B.I.G (it can apparently stand-in for hard, soft and aquatint grounds – available at Takach soon). All my fellow silkscreen friends were nerding-out about a new screen re-streching system from Squeegeeville (who also have some great silkscreen books available).

Hi to anyone I met at SGCI – you can also follow me on Twitter @heatherhuston or on Instagram @printerbird.

Now I am busy preparing for my exhibition at SNAP on April 24th, end of semester and prepping Alberta Printmakers’ after a recent move. Some photos from the trip below!

School of Craft + Emerging Media at ACAD

I teach at the Alberta College of Art + Design and am fortunate to work in both the School of Visual Arts (SVA where I teach print and first-year studies) and the School of Craft + Emerging Media (SC + EM where I teach printing on cloth). SC+EM has recently started its own website which highlights events, visiting artists, research and exhibitions by both faculty and students – its worth a visit and a snoop through the posts.

Uncanny Flux

I recently headed back to Trois Rivieres to set up my solo exhibition Uncanny Flux at Presse Papier. My work arrived ahead of me and unfortunately one of the houses did not emerge from his journey unscathed. Fortunately, after a day and night in the art hospital and a bit of glue, it was back in the game and ready to go. A few technical misunderstandings later and the show was up. The show is a mixture of silkscreen prints and a couple of my house sculptures. The exhibition is on at Presse Papier from now until March 16th.

Portfolio Exchange with Zayed University in Dubai

At the start of the fall semester, an opportunity arose for ACAD’s print media students to exchange work with students at Zayed University in Dubai. We jumped at the chance to connect with a far-away institutions and to see what sort of prints are being made in the desert. The prints have arrived and we were treated to a lovely range of mostly dry points and linocuts. My contribution is below:

Missed Connection/Connection Portfolio for SGC

Lisa Turner invited me to participate in a portfolio project for the upcoming SGC conference in San Francisco. There’s a stellar list of people involved and I’m looking forward to seeing what the likes of Mark Bovey, Beth Howe, Sean Caulfield (and many more) have made. My contribution is related to my new body of work about experiences with auto-immune illness. My work looks at the effects of the destruction of connections between nerve endings caused by the destruction of myelin.

On The Bus at the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts

The portfolio that I organized after my trip to China for the Qijiang Printmaking Festival is currently being exhibited at the EPCOR CENTRE for the Performing Arts here in Calgary. They have a series of window galleries that feature small project works. Its been great to reconnect with some of the international artists that I met on this trip through this exhibition. If you hit up a play at the Centre in the next few months, be sure to take a look.

The Hand Magazine

Some of my work will be in the next issue of The Hand magazine. They feature works by printmakers and photographers in an image-heavy publication. Its a young magazine and its nice to see one dedicated to works by printmakers (and photographers too!). Ultimate friendship mag for people who make multiples. You can subscribe or purchase the next issue by clicking on this link.
