Summer Exhibition Extravaganza!

Lots of exhibitions on the go this summer! My work is still at Red Delicious Press for the Water on Paper exhibition. I am participating in the 12th Lessedra World Art Print Annual in Bulgaria and the 33rd Miniprint of Cadaques in Spain both for the second time. They are large miniprint exhibitions that take place each year. I am also showing work for the first time in New York and have a piece in the Manhattan Graphics Center’s 3rd Annual Printmaking Juried Show. The juror is Roberta Waddell, Curator of Prints Emerita, New York Public Library. Go go prints to places that I’ve never been! (and bring back cake or some sort of local treat).

Printeresting Article

Printeresting is one of my favourite printmaking sites and I was thrilled that they recently accepted an article that I wrote about the 8th Biennial International d’Estampe Contemporain de Trois Rivieres (BIECTR). Back in November, I was invited to be part of the jury, an intensive three-day process that was an awesome opportunity to dialogue about amazing prints (in French no less) and I wanted to visit the exhibition once it was up. In June I attended the opening of the exhibition which sprawls across four venues. Its a great selection of works by some amazing artists from around the world. You can read my article here: Trois-Rivieres Survey

Global Matrix III: Still Travelling

Over a year ago I was pleased to have my work selected for Global Matrix III, a travelling print exhibition that started at Purdue University Galleries. The exhibition showed up at Wright State University’s Robert and Elaine Stein’s Galleries in Dayton, Ohio in late 2012 after having moseyed around the US for the past year. An article about the exhibition mentions my work in the 9th paragraph which in my opinion is the best paragraph.

Calgary Biennial Review and Catalogue Launch

A review of the Calgary Biennial is up on Portage Press, a new site for critical arts writing. My work is discussed in Eric Heitmann’s article, check it out! Also, tonight is the launch of the catalogue for the show. The curator, Steven Cottingham, sought essays and articles from both artists and writers so I’m looking forward to reading about all the different interpretations of home. Today, home means warm refuge since its about -20 here in Calgary. Blargh. Bring on the chocolat chaud!

Trois Rivieres

I recently returned from Trois Rivieres where I served as a juror for the 8th Bienniale Internationale D’Estampe Contemporaine de Trois Rivieres. I was fortunate to be able to spend several days looking at and discussing prints from all around the world. I greatly look forward to seeing the prints in the summer when they are exhibited. I gave a talk afterwards (in French!) at the Universite de Quebec a Trois Rivieres. It was interesting to consider my ideas in another language and to connect to a different audience.

I was greatly impressed with the depth of culture in Trois Rivieres and the way that they integrate culture into the daily life of the city. I met a great many artists and visited Presse Papier (a print-based artist run center and print shop). My brain is still absorbing the depth of the experience, I know I will be back in Trois Rivieres soon!

September Show Openings

I have three shows opening in three different locations this month. This week, both the Calgary Biennial and BIMPE VII opened in Calgary and Vancouver respectively. The Calgary Biennial is up until September 29th, BIMPE VII is up at Federation Gallery until the 22nd but will be moving to Dundarave in October, SNAP (Edmonton) in January 2013 and The University of British Columbia in Kelowna in February 2013.

I also have work in the 2012 Taiwan International Invitational Mini-Prints Exhibition and Symposium which will open at the National Taiwan Normal University on September 15th. Ten artists were selected to represent Canada at this event, should be a pretty excellent show. Wish I could ship myself to countries as easily and cheaply as I send my prints.

New Prints

I spent much of my summer working on these two new large prints. They are both silkscreen on a full sheet of BFK Rives Grey and are 44″ x 30″ each. The pain in the butt factor definitely increases with the size of paper and I do believe that my edition sizes will be about half of what I started with.
